life at Doisy-Védrines

Winter
Attitude
In the vines, we are busy preparing for the next vintage. And on 22 January, it’s ‘Saint-Vincent’, when we celebrate the patron saint of wine, and face the age-old question, is winter finally over or still set in?
Meanwhile, in the cellars, we keep a close eye on the barrels and regularly top up with additional wine to keep them as full as possible.
All that remains is to wish you all heartfelt seasonal greetings and a great vintage ahead!

Autumn
Attitude
The vineyard is glorious. Autumn is a crucial time for the vine and we know we can count on the Ciron river to treat us well. Keeping an eye on ripeness levels in each block of vines is at its most critical, as we look to determine the optimum time to start the harvest, down to the exact hour.
And after the harvest, there’s the vintage, and time for winter pruning to plan ahead for the next vintage.

Summer
Attitude
The vineyard looks stunning at this time of year and is a mass of flowers. Every day we are ready to attach the canes to the trellising to prevent excessive growth and allow sufficient light to the vines for perfect grape ripening. Like a lifeguard scanning the beach, we are constantly on watch …
Have a great summer ahead, with great food and wines to keep you refreshed!

Spring
Attitude
It’s pruning time in the vines. While the buds burst, we are busy training the vine shoots to support the fruit canes and remove any secondary shoots that seem to have a life of their own.
And it goes without saying that we also take great care to protect the vines from any parasitic plants…
Terroir

Doisy-Védrines
at a glance
The Doisy-Védrines estate extends across 51 hectares. Grape varieties: Semillon (80%), Sauvignon Blanc (10%), Sauvignon Gris (5%) and Muscadelle (5%). 18 months maturation in oak barriques for the Grand Vin and 12 months for the second wine.
Doisy-Védrines is located 45 kilometres from Bordeaux on the left bank of the River Garonne in the commune of Barsac, one of the five Sauternes appellations.
For centuries, Barsac has lived in sync with wine. Château Doisy-Védrines sits on the illustrious terroir of ‘Haut Barsac’ and is neighbour to Château Climens and Château Coutet, considered to be among the oldest estates in the whole region.
From the upper reaches of Barsac,
the great story of wine unfurls.

The vines and
the River Ciron
The reason behind Doisy-Védrines’s extraordinarily unique terroir all comes down to one word – Ciron.
From its source in the Landes region, this cool and gentle stream criss-crosses our clay-limestone, red and gravel soils so typical of the Barsac region.
In the autumn, amid the wonder of the morning mists and sun-drenched afternoons, the vines and the Ciron work their magic to create the microscopic and unpredictable botrytis cinerea fungus.
This noble rot, the key factor in the concentration of our grapes, is responsible for the unique signature style of Doisy-Védrines’ luscious and complex wine.
Doisy-Védrines’s vines, which are on average 25 years old, are maintained and replanted with the utmost care. The grapes must only be harvested by the most experienced pickers from the region. The harvest extends over 6 - 8 weeks in three sweeps through the vines, ensuring that every single grape is picked at optimum ripeness. The grapes are vinified in French oak barrels, of which 60-90% are renewed each year.
Fermentation lasts 3 - 4 weeks, during which the temperature of the must is controlled at 20˚ C. The wines are aged in oak barrels and racked every 3 months. No sooner than a year later, the finest wines destined for the Château blend are carefully selected, barrel by barrel.
When the wines are finally bottled after two years, even in a good year a vine will only yield 2 - 3 glasses of wine.
